Technical terms

alliteration – where the first letter of a word is repeated in words that follow (e.g. ‘sunny stuff’)

imagery – where strong pictures or ideas are created in the mind of the reader

onomatopoeia – a word that sounds like the noise it is describing (e.g. ‘sizzling’)

personification – where a human quality is attributed to a thing or idea (e.g. ‘moody clouds’)

repetition – where a word or phrase is repeated to achieve a particular effect (e.g. ‘listening, listening, listening’)

simile – where a phrase establishes similarity between two things, usually involving the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ (e.g. ‘as light and fluffy as feather down’)
